You know, I'm not even sure how long people go for before they start showing symptoms. I think yes, it can be years. Yea, should still get tested.
When people contract HIV, they usually get flu-like symptoms (flu, not cold. flu-like means symptoms that affect the entire body, i.e., pains, aches, fatigue). Then, they're usually fine until they develop AIDS, then they start getting opportunitistic infections, which is what Girl B is referring to.
I agree that "sex education" has more to do with "reproductive health and STDs". Certainly, current sex education should be replaced with "better sex education"... :)

I think it's best to be educated about sex before it's too late to be cured..and not knowing what happened.
