Yeah, I think it does not make a mother less protective by not shrieking to the kid that something major has happened and it is now their cue to cry. If it really hurt, they would cry, with or without your shrieking so why bring the opportunity to their attention right? :o)
If anything, it takes a stronger mother to not shriek *pat on your back*. I still do it sometimes when I am really shocked by the impact. Babies are so bouncy and resilient though aren't they?? Amazing.
Yeah now when tyler fall I'll hold my breath and not make any sound, waiting for any wailing to come. Most of the time he'll just stay where he is (in falling position) motionless for few seconds and then picked himself up. By then my alarm inside me will go off and everything is back to normal. If it really hurts he'll cry and let me know, otherwise it'll be our over-fussing that makes him think he should be crying right?
It's great that you're letting chiara to grow and develope in her own pace. I believe some parents will force or scold their kids if they don't do what other kids are doing or sthg... good for you!

i'm still learning how NOT to gasp/scream/shout whenever i see a kid fall down or hurt himself/herself.
