Things probably went bad, as my vice-commander is a blundering fool. It isn't a problem, though, it'd be very easy to pin the blame on someone else.

Mouse...person? I believe they're just a headband. Pretend ears seem to be very popular with the strange people who read too many comics and like to fantasize about young pop stars.
