Oddly I was thinking the same thing yesterday - Drama was showing the first edition of 'Terry and June' - lovely gentle comedy, a bit of slapstick, but no trace of animosity between any of the characters. They don't even think of making them like that anymore (though I'm happy that there will be a new series of Suffragette comedy 'Up The Women' soon.)
I know. Every time I turn the TV on now to find some light entertainment, all I get is unending dirty jokes - and they're not even funny!!!
Like you say, it's devoid of gentle comedy, slapstick and characters that are actually rootable. I don't mind daring - what we in Norwegian would call "vovet", a bit of sly hint hint nudge nudge .
But it's just - vulgarnameofbodypartshahafakelaughtrackvulgar.
I tried to watch the new sitcom Mom, and in spite of actually having some potential, the end result was so vulgar that it was actually difficult to watch. Sometimes subtlety can be your friend.
I have never watched Terry and June (looked it up now), but it looks lovely. I wish they would send Up The Women here, too. Goodness knows we could use with some quality sitcoms over here. Nowadays it seems as if someone has mistaken "badly written" for "edgy".
