The interesting thing I've noticed is that every time mctabby posts the Summary Executions the list is simply RIFE with Draco/Hermone fics. I haven't the time (or obsessiveness) to actually go back and tabulate which ships show up on there most frequently; it just felt, the last few times, like almost every summary that was being sporked was D/Hr. Maybe they're all being written by teenaged boys? ;)
Oh, my brothers are very insistent on R/Hr and H/G too. They used to mock my N/G arguments rather annoyingly. They think Draco's thing for Hermione is one-sided.
I ask people all the time about the shipping, slyly turning the conversation towards it, just to compare fandom vs. 'real life.' I've never met someone who didn't say R/Hr, except one close friend who thought Harry was going to get together with Hermione. Pity I didn't make a bet with him.
Teenage boys see Draco/Hermione? That's insightful. Maybe that goes back to the adage that boys tease the girls that they like? But, to me, Draco's teasing seems to be a little too mean-spirited to be derived from a crush. An unhealthy obsession, maybe.
My first and rather longlasting (Grades 3-7) childhood infatuation was a D/Hr affair in all the twistedness that implies. It was confirmed eventually that there was a crush on both sides, but why he should choose to express that by cruelty, and why I should find him attractive while loathing him for it, will be a mystery forever, except possibly to child psychologists. The experience, though, has kept my mind open to a D->Hr thing. Hermione is definitely brighter than me, however.
See, I don't really see Draco's picking on Hermione as personalized or obsessive. His obsessiveness is towards Harry, as I see it, and D/Hr is just re-channeled D/H, if you want to go the obsessiveness=lust route.
I wouldn't disagree. That's my reading as well. And I would argue that it's Lucius who shows more obsessiveness about Hermione than Draco in the CoS scenes often brought up in this context. But apparently, such is not the reading of my brothers.
My guess is the above commenter was right: little boys do pick on girls they like and people see this in the D-Hr interactions. I think it's cool that they talk about HP meta, though.
