Am having an argument with a numbskull who claims to have read all the History of Middle Earth books and insists Tolkien didn't use outlines. And I thought I was making good progress with the rage control...
It is odd that I've learnt to bear political, religious, and all other touchy disputes with equanimity, but an argument about Tolkien makes me go all berserker.
Fannish arguments are the worst, aren't they? They're about stories and fictional characters, and yet they can produce a mind-blowing amount of incandescent rage.
What? Didn't you realize Tolkien was the earlier incarnation of Anne Rice, who NEVER uses outlines or rough drafts? :)
Obviously the guy's never read the History of Middle-Earth. Why he'd want to pretend and insist that Tolkien never used outlines ... that's weird. Would he somehow be a Lesser Writer that way? I don't think so.

And isn't it more that this guy has clearly not read The History of Middle Earth anyway?
