Jack does sort of redeem himself though, even if it is only a little bit, when he comes through the haze as the "it thing" after Danny says - "you're not my Daddy" and tells Danny he loves him and to get out. I liked that. It gave him back the humanity he, and the house, had buried. We knew he was toast, but he left that one good thing for his son to remember.
