Day 13 and Horror Class Blog: Alien

My top five movies are as follows: Jurassic Park, Fight Club, Empire Strikes Back, The Thing, and Alien/Aliens. I am counting them as one because I love them both, but feel like it would be too much to have them both on my list. Lucky me, then, since for my Readings in the Genre class, I get to watch Alien and The Thing. Day 13’s horror movie is ( Read more... )

First, thanks for the linking to my blog.

Second, I couldn't agree more. This movie will terrify 100 years from now. It is truly a modern classic. I didn't get to go into the facehugger, alien that is so juicy wonderful, but you have done it here.

I like to ask this question of the movie: what if it had gotten everybody? And the ship had not been destroyed? Would it have morphed into a queen and filled the ship with eggs (frogs can change sex, ants and bees can become queens)? Would it have lay in wait until it got back to earth? And what the heck was that alien doing with a ship full of eggs?

This 'verse is one I would love to play in, so many great stories still to be told.

Thanks again for the link.

You know what else can change sex? The dinosaurs from Jurassic Park.

I think the ship full of eggs is what would have happened if the alien had gotten Ripley on the Nostromo.

See, I always thought the ship was a transport of the eggs and the bugs got out and killed the crew (maybe even just that one alien they found with his ribs burst out). The eggs are too neat, and there is that wicked cool laser mist surrounding them that Kane falls through. I've always wondered why the story never went back to the original ship to explain where it came from, why those eggs were there, and what was going on. I can geek on this one for days.

First of all, GREAT Halloween costume!

I love your enthusiasm here, especially knowing that it all follows your "meh" experience with the novelization. My favorite part of your review -- and it's all solid, by the way; if I'd read this without having seen the movie, I'd be logging onto Netflix now -- is your observation about facehugger "impregnation": "It’s like a child’s view of pregnancy, where you get pregnant from kissing and then the baby grows in your tummy." Brilliant!

Dave's post was a great read, too. I'm glad he wrote about Ash, who was convincingly sinister. Like you, I spent all my time talking about the alien itself.

I was going to mention I've seen the pilot things in the dark horse comics, but that link did it ever so much more completely than I could've. It's funny to watch this movie with all of the background from the sequels. You wonder just how much was planned out and how much sort of fell into place as they went along. At least there's no ret-conning of the alien with terrible CGI scenes like in Star Wars.
And while the AVP movies have been disappointing, the first one fills in the missing pieces as to how the Company finds out about the xenomorphs in the first place. I'd love to see Robert Rodriguez do one since he did such a good job with Predators.

I have the face hugger mask. It comes with a tube that you breathe into to make the thing look like it's moving on your face, which is pretty fun.

I don't disagree with much of what you say in this blog. I particularly agree with your love of the movie Jurassic Park. I'm with you on that one. I will say that sometimes the alien-ness of the setting and the alien itself make it less terrifying for me. Give me something to relate to, and you'll really scare me. Give me something completely outside my realm of experience and I'll just think you're cool for thinking of it, but I know it's not real.
