Luna had a few things on her mind as she left class and headed back to the dorms.
Chief among her thoughts were
O.W.L.s. The last note from her father implied that she would be taking them despite having spent more time here than expected.
As such, she was mentally composing a list of books she wanted to check out of the library in order to begin revising.
Barbas
There was little that Barbas liked better than a young, distracted witch in a relatively secluded area.
He waved his hand and chuckled to himself when he discovered her worst fear. This time, he would succeed.
"Going somewhere?" he drawled casually.
Luna
"Usually." Luna titled her head as she considered the stranger. "Are you?"
Barbas
"I'm right where I need to be," Barbas replied. "Going after a witch." He hissed the last word.
Luna
She whipped her wand from behind her ear in a flash and shouted "
Protego!" as she looked for an escape route. "Not a polite way to behave."
Barbas
"Silly witch," Barbas said, passing his hand in front of his face again. "You're feeding into what I want."
Luna
Luna had learnt quiet a lot last year against the Death Eaters.
Such as, if one thing doesn't work, try something else that will give you a moment to put distance between yourself and your opponent.
To that end she shouted,"
Everte Statum!" and ran.
Barbas
Barbas laughed loudly. The spell had no effect on him, but he managed to create the illusion that it would rebound and effect the girl.
Luna
Luna ducked behind a pillar as the blue sparks from her spell whizzed passed. She fired off another, "
Petrificus Totalus!"
Barbas
Barbas made it appear that this spell rebounded back to her as well. "Haven't you figured it out yet, girl, your magic is useless against me!"
Luna
"It will, or I am not a witch which thou should seek." Luna's determination to succeed just surpassed her steadily growing fear. Her lips were beginning to tremble as she desperately cast a
jelly-brain jinx. It might not have been the strongest in her repertoire, but it was the first to surface in her mind.
Barbas
"Don't fight it," Barbas said, completely unaffected by her spells. "Give in to your fear."
Luna
"No!" Luna was wibbling but fighting. She was a talented witch and she wasn't going to hurt herself or others with her magic. She wouldn't make the same mistakes as...
Images of her mother's last moments flashed through her mind. Her mum casting the spell with a slight variation from last time, the sparks flying out from her wand, and then consuming her and half the room around her.
Luna cast her spell as clearly and concisely as possible despite the knot in her stomach and the tears in her eyes. "
Impedimenta!"
Barbas
Barbas laughed and advanced towards her. "Why do you bother trying? You're not going to beat me."
Luna
There was no logical reason for her spells not to work. Not one thing!
She carefully learnt and practiced them all. She'd read the books years before she had got into school.
She knew what the words meant, what changing one or two letters could do. She was a witch through and through...
Blast and hex it all! This should be working!
She slunk down on the far side of a set of steps. She couldn't find a memory that had even a sliver of happiness in it but she cast a feeble, "
Expecto Patronum!"
She watched as only a weak and small silvery mist made it out of her wand, and then she began to cry.
Chris
Chris was wandering around, trying to find the music room so he could talk to Piper, when he heard someone crying.
All thoughts of a familial visit gone, he rushed down the hall, where he found Luna.
"Luna!" he called. "What's wrong?"
Luna
Luna looked up from where she had buried her face in her hands and the ends of her sleeves. "It didn't work."
Her wand lay a few feet away.
Chris
"What didn't work?" Chris asked, sitting next to her and carefully putting an arm around her.
Barbas
Barbas clenched his fists in frustration and disappeared. Somewhere on this island was a witch he would kill.
Luna
She didn't move from him as she tried to wipe her eyes with her sleeves in an attempt to stop crying. "My magic. I tried my best spells. My very best. Not one was successful! He was still there! They each came back to me!"
Chris
"Who was still there?" Chris asked gently, having not seen anyone but Luna when he approached.
Luna
"A man." She answered. The tears were ebbing, nearly gone. "He turned my spells against me. He said something about going after witches..."
Chris
Chris frowned at that. "Okay, let's get you back to your room," he said, standing up and offering her his hand. "And then I'm going to find my brother and we'll figure out what's going on."
Luna
Normally, she would have offered to help, but this time, she simply took his hand and stood up. "Thank you."
Chris
"You're welcome," Chris replied, giving her a reassuring smile. "Trust me. We'll get it worked out."
Luna
"Promise?" She grinned shyly remembering when he gave his last promise.
Chris
He also recalled his last promise and he grinned back. "Yes, I promise."
Luna
"Then that is good enough for me." She managed a weak smile.
