to teach
genma pov
He was not a good teacher, he knew that. And yet, when Iruka asked him, he said yes and did what was expected from him as jounin. He tried to. He wanted to show that he was good for something other than killing. And maybe, next time he had to take a forced leave from missions, he wouldn't have to do judge a stupid contest. Teaching didn't sound half bad, the way the guys that did described it sometimes.
Iruka wanted him to teach them about needles. They were his specialty, after all; he knew everything there was to know about them. It should have been easy to teach a bunch of kids. But what was he supposed to tell them? Those little, eager faces - so eager and ready to become killers. He showed them the different sizes, the different uses, and the many points on a human body that could be hit - spots that would kill an enemy, paralyze them, blind them or let them slowly bleed to death. He'd done all those things to his enemies before. Once or twice or more often even to one of his own - and not always to ease their pain.
He could time an enemy's death to the point of perfection so the enemy would be unable to move and couldn't help but lie on the ground and wait for his comrades to relay a message before dying - he didn't even need to calculate it anymore.
He had to stop in the middle of his lecture. He shot Iruka a look and saw that almost imperceptible nod allow him to leave.
An hour later, the teacher found him on the roof of the school building.
"You okay?" Iruka asked and Genma snorted in response.
"Of course," he spat. He pulled his legs up. "Sorry."
Iruka sat down next to Genma and shook his head. "I'm the one who has to apologize. I shouldn't have asked."
The silence stretched between them.
"It takes a lot of courage to teach them," Genma commented, not looking at Iruka. He couldn't - not yet.
Iruka's agreement stayed unsaid. "But by teaching them, I can make sure… they won't be unprepared."
Genma leaned forward, encircling his long legs, and rested his chin on his knees. "What if one of them dies. Don't you feel-," he broke off, hiding the rest of his question behind his senbon.
"Responsible? Like I failed to teach them enough?" the teacher supplied.
Genma nodded.
Iruka smiled. "Every time."
