Thanks for the review! I guess you are right and it's rather the chakra than the soul that's being passed down. Also, I think that "soul" has quite different meanings in different religions and is difficult to explain. I mean: What's the core of a person? Yet apparently besides having Ashura's chakra Naruto also has a personality of his own.
Oh, yes, a final power-up... I had not realized it, I rather thought that the Rikudo was somehow swearing them in.
Well you're not wrong. :P He's just giving them a power-boost while he's at it.
"Soul" is definitely a slippery concept. But it seems to me that Indra and Ashura's chakra is not a soul exactly but a manifestation of their grudge that won't stop being reborn until their descendants properly settle the issue. Or if they are actually being reborn this means that Naruto and Sasuke have two souls: their own, and one of the sage's sons.
"how could the two different generations of Indra & Ashura reincarnations be walking the earth at the same time?"
I don't think that is the case. Once Madara and Hashi died the souls of Indra and Ashura were released from them so they could be reborn in Naruto and Sasuke. I'm pretty sure Madara died before Sasuke was born. Anway, that is how I think it works. EDIT: I don't think they regained the souls either when they were Edo'ed back to life. So they don't have them now.
EDIT: Loved the panel with Naruto and Sasuke standing in front of the sage. It looks like they are high fiving each other LOL.
Edo Tensei resurrects someone by recalling their soul from 'The Pure World', so Madara and Hashirama do have their souls. But you are right that they no longer have Ashura and Indra attached to them, as they have been reborn into Naruto and Sasuke. This is different from the Buddhist concept of reincarnation where Ashura, Hashirama and Naruto would all be the same soul, making it impossible for two of them to exist at the same time.
The reincarnation bit puzzled me too since we have Hashirama and Madara walking around with Naruto and Sasuke. I'm wondering if Kishimoto originally planned something else or if he just wanted his cake and to eat it too.
We might get Sasuke's conversation with the Sage in flashbacks which I'm really curious about.
I hope so too! I mean, how do you tell a young man that he's the reincarnation of the person who's responsible for all the conflicts since the time of the Rikudo?
I know the next chapter will be out in hours, but I just noticed something about the chapter that may foreshadow what happens in the future. Or maybe not.
When the sage asked him what he wanted to do after the war, Naruto said "I know what it is for someone to be my friend...and I want to protect them, that's all." No mention of becoming Hokage?
Anyway, I thought that was an interesting omission.
