Chapter 680: Once Again

Spoilers of course, and some large images; this chapter had some very nice dramatic panels.

"Sasuke is more logical and pragmatic, while Naruto is more intuitive and empathic. Perhaps as the battle goes on, the ultimate message will be that you need both." Yes, I think it is ( ... )

I wasn't really thinking of a really literal friend-or-idol scenario where they really get captured, more that the dramatic tension here seemed kind of similar: save friends vs. save the world. It doesn't seem like Kaguya will capture anyone, she seems focused on just attacking in this chapter. But, who knows what will happen ( ... )

"So it will be like, Naruto's ability to see the good in other people or their potential or whatever is important, but Sasuke's logic and strategic abilities are also important. If you stick them together, they combine into a reasonably good Hokage, so the ending might be that they're like, joint Hokages or something. "

Or neither? There is precedent for Sakura to follow in Tsunade's footsteps to become Hokage instead. She may not have their op powers, but she does bring her own talents to the table. I would love this twist even more than Sasuke becoming Hokage. The manga is ending, maybe it will go out with a bang instead of a whimper.

That would be a pretty interesting twist! I could almost see it as being like, Naruto and Sasuke are very powerful but they also tend to be too extreme towards their own styles (Naruto's saving-people-thing, Sasuke being a bit too ruthless), so they're at their best when working with a leader who can see how to combine their abilities to best effect.

Thanks for the review, and also thanks for the comments on Lava. I think that with hostages just as with lava there's a fundamental difference between real world and fiction: I am not certain, but I think that when push comes to shove, a policeman will rather risk the life of a hostage than the end of the world.

Protecting the whole group with his Rinnegan Susanoo Sasuke was the stronger and more important person two chapters ago, but now it seems that Naruto is stronger, saving the whole group including the hawk and then being able to float.

Also I wonder whether the manga might really end with everyone losing their chakra. Surviving, but having to find civilian jobs.

Well, of course. In real life, if there was a scenario like a bomb squad guy can either save a trapped person OR defuse a bomb to save a thousand people, I don't think most people would say the moral choice was save the one person. But of course in fiction, when you're playing a video game, you usually just assume that the villain won't REALLY manage to destroy the world. And of course, the potential victims aren't real people, but a bunch of NPCs you'll never even see usually. (games that subvert this can be very effective because the trope is SO ingrained, imo)

Hm, that would be a very interesting ending imo. Maybe the characters will ultimately decide that chakra is just too dangerous, and raising children to be assassins is kind of messed up. I wonder whether Kishimoto will decide to go for an ending like that rather than maybe a more typical sort of 'they achieve world peace, Naruto is the Hokage, everybody is happy, the end' sort of deal.
