[FINAL CHAPTER] 700: Uzumaki Naruto!!!

Naruto manga
1999 - 2014
Fifteen years. And what a run it's been. I will be the first to admit that this manga has plenty of flaws. Once or twice in the past, I've actually stopped and asked myself why I was still reading it. And the answer to that question is that I'm attached to this manga. I've grown attached enough to these characters that I ( Read more... )

I personally thought all of it was a major cop-out. I wasn't expecting much and it managed to go lower than my lowest expectations, which I didn't think was even possible. Being a major supporter of SasuSaku for many years, you'd think I'd be pleased by getting what I wanted. I'm not. I hated its resolution, it felt forced, and up until the very last second, it hadn't felt that way. Simply put not a single question I had was answered and it left tons of heaps of things unresolved. I know I'll mellow out and get over it eventually but I think I'm entitled to be a little steamed. I'm just sad I can't celebrate with the rest of my shipping buddies.

I can understand that. The only reason I'm not more disappointed is that I stopped expecting much of anything from this series a while back. It had been going downhill for a while, but the whole Kaguya thing was the straw the broke the camel's back. If Kishi hadn't wasted time by shoehorning in a plot device character with no real motives, no backstory and no characterization (we already HAD a Big Bad!) then there would've been more time to wrap things up. Sasuke's one day revoltion was also something I think we could've really done without.

I have a friend that ships SS who feels much the same way. Her words to me were, "I felt like SasuNaru got more development than SasuSaku with that ending."

And even that (SasuNaru) wasn't done as well as it should have been. I never felt anything from Sasuke -->Naruto so the end where they're suddenly BFF rang hollow.

Madara should have been it. All of that action and dimension jumping could have been done without Kaguya easily without shoehorning a Final Boss in for no reason who we had no idea existed until she appeared. It's the ultime WTF.

This chapter wrapped up the manga quite nicely. There were really no surprises. As to Orochimaru, Kabuto, and the rest of team Taka? I also would have liked to see what happened to them.

Kishimoto is involved in the movie The Last which bridges the gap between 699 and 700. Hopefully we will get the details not covered in 699. Probably won't get to see the movie until next spring sometime :( The movie will also be novelized, hopefully we get that a lot sooner.

As for the mini-series? Kishimoto is not writing this. It is going to be published by Jump Books, so I'm expecting a series of graphic novels. The first book will be about Kakashi. I will definitely be reading these. Hopefully we will be able to get them in all the usual places.

It still feels weird when Wednesday rolls around and there is no Naruto chapter.

I didn't know the mini series wasn't written by Kishi. I should've guessed really, since there's already the Rock Lee and Sasuke spin offs. But having another author or authors could actually be a good thing since I definitely get the feeling Kishi might be just a little tired of writing Naruto after fifteen years. XD

The movie is supposed to be aliens (the Ootsutsuki clan actually are aliens it turns out), so I'm not really looking forward to it, but hopefully it'll mention what happened to some of the characters.

What Sasuke spin-off? I only know of the cutesy SD Rock Lee anime!

This. Same kind of thing as the Rock Lee one, but I've only seen Japanese scans here and there on tumblr so not sure if it's actually out yet.

Thanks for giving us different transcriptions of Sasuke's and Naruto's children's names. I could have lived with "Bolt" as a reference to Naruto's father, but Salad(a) was just too stupid, so I am glad you pointed out that it should be Sarada, and Boruto for Naruto's son is better than Bolt ( ... )

Commenting to my own comment, because the last one was too long for this addition:

I have now had time to reread the interaction between Naruto and his son, and it's creepy. I mean, I guess everyone can remember times when their parents had little time to care for them. But with Naruto and his son, some things seem to be quite bad. First, I think it's quite extreme that the son says "I hate the Hokage". I don't know the age of the son, and maybe at certain ages there's times when a child sometimes says this and it should not be taken too seriously, but if the son is twelve, this might be different. Naruto's behaviour is far worse. He should not tell his own son that all the village is family for him or tell him he must be a ninja who needs to endure. He should tell him that even though he has to work long hours sometimes this does not mean that he does not care for him and should make clear to him that being his son, Boruto will always be special to him.

I'm mostly indifferent to the pairings, but I thought Sai/Ino was a bit odd too since I've never really considered Sai a sexual being. Just because he called her gorgeous that one time when he was told to say the opposite of what he really thought? And Karui must really love Chouji to move away from Kumogakure (because him moving over there would obviously be out of the question). But these are the pairings that happen when you don't have enough women in the first place.

The modernization thing just makes my head spin because then I start wondering how they have internet connections and whether ninja drive cars now.

Technology in the manga was always a bit weird. They had no fire weapons and no motorized vehicles, and sometimes I wondered whether they had even invented the wheel (until eowyn_unquendor found an image from an anime filler showing a baby's cart), but with other things as computers and television, they were always up to date. Well, almost. Their computers are as huge as in the Seventies, but they already have video conferences: chapter 488.

LOL, this reminds me of two old (but hilarious) fanfics I've read. One features Itachi introducing Sasuke to fanfic as a way of further traumatizing him. In the other fic, someone in the Narutoverse invents a car...but they make the terrible, terrible mistake of letting Kakashi drive the prototype.
