When you try to boot your computer don't you hear some extra or unusual beeps? i.e. when my video card died, i got one long beep followed by two short ones. If you hear nothing extraordinary, - probably something is wrong with DIMM...
DIMM is Dual In-line Memory Module. Anyway the best way to find out what's wrong is either to call a service center, or try to open the tower by yourself and check, whether everything is placed correctly, and you can smell no burning or see some burned and blackened places on details. It is very hard to tell, what's wrong, when you don't see the computer. btw, about scrapping sounds: I remember hearing some in my computer, when a cooler suddenly fell off the processor..

You wouldn't happen to know if IDE and SATA drives can live in the same box peacefully, would you? :P
