Leonard Cohen wrote it, though Jeff Buckley did a great cover of it (and it's been covered by a bunch of terrific singers since then). Rufus Wainwright's version might be my favorite these days ( ... )

Oh brilliant! ::beams:: Thanks! I think the one I remember is the Jeff Buckley one. It literally made me cry but it was amazing to listen to.

Cohen wrote like 15 pages of lyrics to it which is why different performers don't always sing the same ones. There's a very interesting article about the song here on Wikipedia.

I should have thought of Wikipedia! It's not blocked or anything!

I seem to favour the Jeff Buckley version, which I think is the very definition of fragile. I shall look for other covers to listen to once the niece and nephew go home. As it is, having a 'nearly-four!'year old and a two year old wandering about makes it very difficult to listen to anything that's not them ::grin::

In related news, Leonard Cohen just won the Glenn Gould prize and promptly donated it to the Canadian Council for the Arts. What a man. <3
