I hit upon an interesting epiphany last night. I posted about marriage a while back, and specifically referenced the folks who say that when they get married it'll be strictly for a business deal. Now, a few things first, once you throw out religious morality there isn't a moral objection to it. That isn't the issue. But it's never sat right ( Read more... )

I agree that marriage is definitely a goalpost of achievement in society today. Which really sucks, because it puts pressure on people to enter into a (theoretically) binding contract for a big party and a poofy dress.

I don't think my parents were half as proud of my Masters degree as they were of my marriage, which is sad.

Yeah, it's definitely sad. Attitudes are certainly changing. But there's still that concept of a person's crowning moment being the day they get married. It's different for women of course. I think girls still get indoctrinated with this 'when you get married, you're princess for a day' kind of fantasy.

Ooooh, do they ever. You should see the selection of tiaras available. Not to mention all the stupid, embellished fripperies you can get, such as jeweled tattoos so either enliven existing tats or to match your gown's embroidery.

marriage is strange business. mostly i despise the idea some of my coworkers have on the issue. that is quite acceptable to go into debt, great way to start a marriage, to have the wedding of your dreams. there is a lot of women in my field getting married and some of them are getting married again ( ... )
