This specifically delt with animals and breeding animals in captivity. So this really isn't nature 'doing it's thing' I believe.
It sounds like you're thinking mainly of animals in the wild which has never been an issue. It's strictly been panda's in captivity.
So I don't think it's necessarily them being to stupid to procreate. Part of their learning process may have simply been watching other members of the species have sex. Animals in captivity wouldn't commonly have that influence.
As to can the species survive, my understanding is that panda's have become endangered due to a decrease in bamboo (their primary diet). Should we allow nature to do it's thing? I don't know. Keeping genetic variety in place seems to be a positive goal as the health of the planet is concerned. However subverting natural evolutional pressures to survive may be increasingly detrimental in the long run.
