I'm so sorry, Matt. Even if you didn't know the person well, there's still an initial shock.

This is why I worry about how to raise a kid in the modern world. If a 140 character status update is how he finds out about all major happenings, is that really healthy?

I'm sorry for your loss. My mother found out about my sister-in-law's suicide while browsing Facebook in a public library, and I'm sure would have reacted in a similar fashion had someone spoken to her just then.

This kind of thing is also part of why I'm scaling way back on mobile social networking and overall time spent on the Internet in general...

Sorry to hear that. I also found out about a friend's suicide through Facebook.

But then, I'm not sure the mechanism of finding out is a terrible thing. There really is no way to find out that makes it easier. :-(
