Eleventh Conspiracy
Expressions of Love

Kaito was desperate, Shinichi realized.

Twice before, Ran had kissed him. Once, they were still little kids-a decade or so ago-and her parents had broken up. She’d run away from the house, unsure of where to go but sure that she didn’t want to be home or with her family. She was running near the park, on her way to his home, when she ran full force into him.

At the sight of her tears, he’d shaken off the irritation and winded struggles for breath, gathered her up and nearly carried her back home. His parents weren’t there-Yuusaku locked in a hotel for last minute writing and Yukiko out shopping at the mall with some friends-and he’d nearly blown his top when she’d calmed down enough to tell him what was wrong, but he’d kept his composure for her sake. She’d thrown her arms around his neck and given his a peck on the cheek, thanking him. They had both been rather red-faced after that, but it faded with their inevitable exhaustion.

The second time, they were in middle school, and Ran received a confession. It was from an ecchi anime otaku who happened to be a total creep, was a bit more than a year older than her, and nearly scarred her for life. She was over-exaggerating, he had thought, and she was, but she was hurting so he needed to comfort her.

That was all that mattered. The creep had come onto her, and she’d just about drop kicked him when she jumped out of the tree she’d tried to hide from him in. Then she’d wailed until someone came, and she wouldn’t stop the tears until Shinichi came for her in the infirmary, and she’d pecked him with thanks again, but this time on the lips.

They might’ve gotten together after that, but Shinichi felt that he shouldn’t take advantage of it. The kiss wasn’t the slightest bit tentative, much more like a familial tap like his mother used to give; so it must’ve been meant to feel like that.

He’d never kissed her back.

But Kaito now, was clinging to him like a last anchor to this realm, like one of them might be spirited away if he let go. He nuzzled Shinichi’s neck, now wet with tears, and didn’t bother with such physical displays of affection as a kiss.

“IloveyouIloveyouIloveyou.”

The first time Shinichi ever felt like initiating a kiss, and he wasn’t even sure he’d be able to, if only because Kaito was holding onto him so tightly that he couldn’t move. And now Shinichi was tearing up too, muttering that he wasn’t back for good; Conan would come back, and the only response was, “That’s okay.”

And then: “IloveyouIloveyouIloveyou.”
