Chapter one
Dana Fairbanks was carrying a suitcase in each hand while her parents followed her up the stairs with their arms full of their beloved daughter’s belongings.
Finally, after two long flights of stairs they reached the second floor. Dana bent down to look over at the bunch of keys in the hand carrying the lighter of the two cases and double-checked her room number. K218. She walked through the first door and discovered there were two possible corridors to walk down, she chose the one numbered 213-218 and put a bag down to unlock the door to the corridor. As the family walked down the corridor they looked for the correct room, finding it was the last room on the right with the door to the communal kitchen also at the end of the corridor. Dana slowly turned the key to her new home and turned the handle with a nervous expectation of finding a room she would hate. Instead she found a bright room with another person in it.
‘Hi, I’m Alice’ the cheery occupant greeted with a warm smile. ‘I’m your roommate for the year. What’s your name?’
‘Um, I’m er Dana. Dana Fairbanks’ Dana replied flabbergasted at the unexpected of news of having to share a room. ‘These are my um parents Sharon and Irwin’.
‘Hey, don’t worry about your daughter, I’m not some axe murderer or anything’ Alice smirked at their look of disdain upon seeing Alice.
Alice offered to help Dana unpack her things and get comfortable to which Dana agreed, thankful of an excuse to get rid of her parents as soon as possible.
Once Dana had said her goodbyes to her parents and promised to call them every night for the first week to let them know how she was, she collapsed on the bed and breathed a sigh of relief. ‘Not a fan of having your parents snooting around your stuff huh?’ Alice inquired after witnessing Dana’s frantic attempts at preventing her parents unpacking a particular bag. ‘Um, yeah you could say that’ Dana laughed, unwilling to divulge any further information. ‘Not a dead body or anything?’ ‘What? Eww noo!’ Dana squirmed at the idea of the corpse. Alice simply laughed at her roommate’s face and then turned and picked up a magazine and started scanning through it. ‘What’s that you’re reading?’ Dana asked. ‘What this? Oh it’s a um Diva magazine’ Alice replied. ‘I’ve never heard of it’ Dana concluded. ‘That’s because it’s a British magazine’ Alice chuckled. ‘Why do you buy a British magazine?’ Dana asked. ‘Because I like to know what goes on in British dyke culture compared to America’ Alice said, interested in Dana’s reaction at realising she has a gay roommate.
Dana looked dumbstruck as she processed Alice’s declaration. ‘That’s cool’ Dana finally said, before continuing ‘Can you keep a secret?’ ‘Um yeah sure I can’ Alice smiled sweetly expecting herroommate to come out to her any second now. Dana gulped and then blurted out ‘I’m gay too but nobody knows I am except for you now obviously but please don’t tell anybody as I don’t want my parents to find out.’ ‘Alice melted at how nervous Dana looked ‘Aww I promise I won’t tell a soul. Pinkie swear?’ ‘Pinkie swear’. With that, the two young women locked little fingers and shook them, both feeling their pulses quicken and electricity shoot through their bodies before they retreated their hands and lay back down on their respective beds.
