Are you using a camera? If you are, try using a scanner instead 'cause I know that the flash sometimes dulls the colors with the glare. There's one I haven't posted because it's too big for my scanner & I can't lose the glare when I take a picture of it.
I don't have a scanner though, I know the flash sucks but I'm getting better at working the angles. I'm thinking about giving in and using a french curve or a compass on something like this in the future... you think the precision is worth it? Or will it lose too much character and just look like a 2D CGI... oh what woes they trouble me )..;

Go for the instruments if you're going to get more complicated because the character really comes from the colors & patterns you've been using. The precision will only give you a better skeleton.
