A friend of mine said, paraphrased: "The encouraging thing is that a lot of straight people who didn't know they were allies just assumed that it would get struck down. I mean it's just so obviously wrong. Then when they woke up on Nov. 5th and looked around they were shocked, horrified, and confused in the sad simple way that decent people get.

It reminds me of what I read about how the DMCA and various other similar legislation and lawsuit results came about - all the opposing people thought "that's ridiculous" and didn't even bother opposing it because they thought nobody would take it seriously... only to wake up the next day and go "what the wtf?"
