Robots in our enviorment

Where and could robots fit into our society has a form of protection. Can robots be police man, private security, school security, or even doormen? Today in class many of the presentations brought up some very good points both for and against the robots. I however came away with the feeling that having these robots placed in roles of such ( Read more... )

Facts are not judgments

I think this is really the key for me. I think it is going to take a long time for artificial brains to become as sophisticated as natural ones. Regardless of whether or not you agree with human values, they are our values, and we live by them. Any entity cannot share these values cannot be given a important and powerful position in our society.

I think you have a good point. Industries such as law enforcement require humans and not robots. This field requires interaction with people and human reactions to events that can occur. Because robots can’t provide this law enforcement is not the field for them. They should probably be used in other industries where they can do menial tasks. This would probably not require them to interact with humans or respond to unpredictable events.

A machine is safe to the extent of its controller so it is not the machine itself that is the problem it is the way it is implemented and the thing which is in command of it. I think robots could be designed with a friendly interface and be operated in a manner that is safe, I agree artificially intelligent robots may not be able to act on intuition but in the case I suggested they shouldn’t have to be people friendly- I’m not suggesting they be mean, or act on feelings. For example if used in some special task force it would be instructed to take out specific targets, like when a missile is fired the situation is assessed before and its target is specified by a human all it needs to do is find its way to the target. If security robots are implemented in this simplistic way I believe they could be used efficiently and safely. However in the case of security robots taking the place of all security personnel, the robot assessing the situation, choosing its target, dealing with our unpredictability, and interacting with us is too ( ... )
