I'm done with the first draft of my Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close paper. I finished it yesterday, making it the fastest first draft I've ever written (7.2k in seven days). Now I'm going to edit the shit out of it, one section a day, so I can go to Brazil on the 18th with a nice second draft finished. The third and forth drafts are mostly just ( Read more... )

I had a structure and history of the English language class last summer where we had to learn the basics of Old English, Middle English and Early Modern English grammar. We focused heavily on OE and got really weird texts where you didn't recognize a single word and were supposed to identify different word types and then see the gender and case of the nouns and also generally be able to decline lots of nouns / conjugate verbs. I think it's easier if you already speak a language that is similar in grammatical aspects (German still has all the cases, verb forms OE had) but it was still not my favorite thing in the world. So I'm really glad I've never had to read Beowulf ( ... )
