for the life of me i can't figure out how everyone else on this game has so much stuff. my pet is scraping by.

Yeah. Taking surveys help. I've taken quite a few.
It also helps if you have a lot of people on your friendslist playing the game. That way you can visit them every day and get the rewards from that.
