I'd like to take this moment to share my view on this celebrity debacle in our country. I think it's ludicrous. I can't turn on the news, read a paper, walk down the street, go to work, without hearing about How many shots Britney can drink, How many sit ups Justin can do, How many times Bard and Angelina have sex a week. Wow. I think I'm bitter. And a hypocrite cause I read ONTD religiously. Still true. fantazmegorik February 22 2007, 15:53:52 UTC
We're a country in a bloody war that no one wants and that no one can get out of. We're overweight, our kids are killing each other and if you're not on painkillers you're on crack or heroin. And you have an STD.

Why do you think that the funny and/or witty political/social satires fall behind the big action blockbusters? It's all good old fashioned escapism. Who wants the real world when Anna Nicole Smith's hick mother wants to exhume a long dead body for a whole burial in Podunk? Who wants to help solve the ills of the world when you can buy Britney's hair on eBay?

Television news exists for two reasons. One, to educate the public, obviously, and two, to remain on the air. Like it or not, it IS a television program. Not necessarily in the same category as Desperate Housewives, but it's still a show that people either watch or don't watch. The producers have to make sure people keep watching, and providing a mix of entertainment news and "real" news (aka the ACTUAL NEWS) is what keeps people tuning in. It's sad but true that people who want a genuine education about what's happening in our world today, and what will truly impact our lives, have to go one (or sometimes more than one) step beyond simply turning on their TV or clicking on a website link.
