But BE WARNED, talking about Indie Music with white people is perhaps the most dangerous subject you touch upon. One false move and you will lose their respect and admiration forever. Here are some general rules
  • Bands that have had their songs in an Apple ad are still marginally acceptable

Oh indie rockers. I see what you're saying Natalie, and I tend to agree with you (although I think music critics are divided up in to two groups: rockists and poptimists - rockists value authenticity over all else; poptimists believe a good song is a good song is a good song). I really don't care what scorn I get from indie rockers because I listen to quite a bit of what they do, but still like commercial pop when it's done right (Toxic, Since U Been Gone, SexyBack).

I actually read all three of those blogs you mentioned quite a bit (and Idolator) and think P4k is the most useful, but it's status as being uncool is entirely self-inflicted from the when it tried to be the arbiter of what indie rock should and shouldn't be (look at the 0.0 reviews of Travis Morrison's Travistan and Liz Phair's s/t album). The criticism on P4k is pretty useless but the reporting is usually solid.
