I'm trying to make some of my breastmilk into yogurt for my baby who is starting solids, but I'm very poor and can't afford to buy a lot. From what I've seen it looks like I'll need a candy thermometer, a thermos, and some yogurt culture mix. It's not at all cost effective for me to buy those things, so I was hoping I could get some advice from others who make their own yogurt.
1. Do I have to use a candy thermometer or is there another method to use when heating the milk?
2. What's a good way to keep it warm without a thermos? The closest thing I have is a thin vinyl lunch sack that has minimal padding. I also have a microwaveable hot pad. Will that work?
3. I have a bottle of probiotics I don't foresee myself using again before it goes bad. Can I use those instead of yogurt culture since it contains the necessary bacteria? I know I can use some fresh yogurt as a starter, but the kind my husband buys has HFCS in it and I don't want my baby ingesting any.
Any advice or experience you have would be useful.
