I just un-came out to my professors, i.e., I emailed them asking to go back to being called Ellen. In some ways, this "uncoming out" is a lot more liberating than any other coming out.
The text of my email is below the cut.
Hello, everyone.
You all likely recall my decision to change my name about eight months ago. For various reasons, I need to go back to being Ellen (or, if you're Mark, Xerxes). I don't really care what name is used to refer to me... don't worry about making mistakes, and I still don't particularly care about pronouns either. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and would be happy to answer any questions you may have. I'm reachable via email and am around campus.
Thank you so much for your conscientiousness regarding my shifting names. I hope your respective summers are going well, and I look forward to seeing you in the fall!
Regards,
Ellen
Also, check out my Flickr (
