As described by the science blogger Blake Stacey The atlas detector will have atoms smashed in it travelling at 99.99999_ % the speed of light, creating temperatures found a nanosecond after the big bang.  It will fill 27 CDs worth of data a minute.

This is a ~5min time laps video of its construction, and our DOOM!!!!

I eagerly wait for the results.

Dude! Seriously!

I've been following this project for a while. As someone with actual science knowledge, what do you think will happen when they fire this thing up?

I found a really good post awhile ago from a physicist who gave a bunch of snarky % for what would happen. Mainly, they are looking for more direct evidence of some particles like the higgs particle (I think) and things like that, but he gave a low chance to anything really interesting happening. I'll look for that blog post, but I don't even remember who it was.

Pretty much that even though there will be massive amounts of energy involved, it will still be way to low to create really cool stuff. I mean, we already create anti-matter in the lab (I think they have even created an anti-atom), this will just create a little bit more. Physicists are already trying to secure funding for the next jump-up in power level, depending on what direction this project sends them in.
