It's tough, but it's possible. A cousin of mine and his wife have been teaching English overseas for many years now, and the nature of the work/insanely active schedule pushes and pulls them in all directions. They recently spent some 8-months apart with her in Shanghai and he in Switzerland.

My guess to their secret is frequent contact/as many visits as possible. Dealing without the physical for so long is certainly difficult, but I think that just calls for some creativity. If you can make it past the initial hurdles so that both of you are set on track to fulfill your life goals, you shouldn't have smooth sailing from there. :)
