Manga... more manga... I said GIMME MORE! - Beauty is the Beast
all right... Manga reviews :P yup, I'm in the mood for writing, so yeah, I shouldn't refrain myself right?
I was going to list the manga that I had... but then, I'm too lazy ^^; Also, I don' t think I need to review the shounen manga... cos those are easily found on the net. I'd just like to say that presently, my top 5 is
- Bleach --> this manga is JUST TOO AWESOME... the art is soo nice and the storyline is really good
- Hikaru no Go --> I LUV this manga!!! the ending wasn't satisfactory, but the rest... Love the storyline and art
- Kenshin --> this manga is what got me in the world of manga... it is a classic!
- Slam Dunk --> Awesome sport manga :) the art at the end is really nice... I hope there's a part 2... but I doubt it.
- Yakitate Japan! --> another one of my favorite... different from the others ;) worth your time!
I guess what I'd like to review is shoujo manga and yaoi manga... because summaries and spoilers for these are really hard to find!
I went to Capitaine Québec, Indigo and Chapters this week-end and so here is the list of what I bought:
Ouran high school Host Club vol. 1-3 by Hatori Bisco --- Viz Shojo Beat
Kare Kano vol. 15 & 17 by Tsuda Masami --- Tokyopop
Crimson Hero vol. 1 by Takanashi Mitsuda --- Viz Shojo Beat
and discovery of the week-end: Beauty is the Beast by Matsumoto Tomo ---- (i couldn't get my hand on vol. 1 by Viz Shojo Beat, but thanx God, there's internet)
I'm kind of lazy tonight so I'll just review Beauty is the Beast tonight
Beauty is the Beast by Matsumoto Tomo --> 5 volumes long (complete)
Chapter 1: Because her parents relocated, Yamishita Eimi applied for boarding school. However, at the girl dormitory, there's a courage initiation for every new boarder and if she fails, she will be kick out. Eimi's mission is to sneak to the boy's dormitory and steal the name plaques of room 201. With the help of her roomate Kurogawa Misa and the girl from the next room, Katsugari Suzu, Eimi gathers enough info to sneak in the boy's dormitory. However, her presence was discovered. Luckily, bad boys from room 201, Wanibuchin and Inui, helped her out by hiding her, handing her the plaques and telling her how to get out, therefore, Eimi successfully accomplished her mission and got to stay.
Chapter 2: A first-year boy named Fujita declares his love to Misa who accepted the confession, mesmerized by Fujita's bone struture (she's an artist... so she can't help it). While Misa is gradually developing feelings for Fujita, Fujita is preoccupied: he has to move away because his parents are relocating and he doesn't know how to announce his news to Misa. Eimi overhears Fujita talking to his friends and tells him to request for boarding if he wants to stay. Fujita says it's not that simple... that you don't just do what you want to do... and for example, he challenges her to go and tell the two boys ahead to sit down quietly... Eimi immediately heads towards the two boys and realized it's Wanichin and NuiNui (new nicknames for Wanibuchin and Inui)... Meanwhile, Fujita's friend is worried for Eimi because Wanichin and Nuinui have a bad reputation.... however, our heroine gets along well with them. In the end, Fujita follows Eimi's advice and become a boarder at the boy's dormitory... and asks Misa to go to a movie with him, before he is admitted to the dormitory if not, they won't have a chance to go because of the rules.
Chapter 3: Eimi was chosen to go to the convenience store to buy snacks for everyone. Thus she sneaks out, sees Wanichin aheads of her and ends up following him. Wanichin is meeting a foreigner friend, Carlos... Carlos explains that Wanichin and him became friend in Mexico where Wanichin lived with his grandfather from age 8-16. Wanichin suggests to go see the fireworks and Eimi follows him. There is a little festival with plenty of stands and they play to various games... Wanichin teaches Eimi how to catch fishes with paper net... She names the gold fish Kuroko. Everything goes well until Carlos bumps into a drunk... The drunk threatens Carlos and hurt Eimi. Wanichin loses his temper and drags the drunk to an alley, beating him up... He comes back with blood on him and asks Eimi if she's afraid of him. Our clueless heroine answers: to become wanichin's wife, it will take a lot of courage and Wanichin saying : dinner's instant noodles again. Aren't you afraid of me? Anyway, everything goes well and they headed back to the dormitories where Eimi's co-boarders are still waiting for their snacks.
Chapter 4: Katsuragi Suzu is the most popular girl in school and dormitory. She is part of the karate club and tries to maintain a "pure" image; however, she has a secret: she likes cute things... esp. cute underwear. As a pure person, she shouldn't be attracted to underwear and therefore hides it, but it's a great weight on her shoulders. She meets Nuinui and starts to ask him for advice. Meanwhile, there's a pervert around the dormitory stalking after the girls and stealing their underwears. The managers organized patrols to ensure the girl's security. In the end, Suzu is caught staring at underwears and finally lets out her secret. She feels very relieved. At the same time, the pervert infiltrates the dormitory and steals some panties... he is stopped by Suzu and Wanichin. Friendship starts to blossom between Nuinui and Suzu.
Chapter 5: It's some kind of vacation and everyone in the dormitories is leaving for the exception of Eimi and Wanichin. While cleaning the bathroom, Eimi breaks a pipe and screams for help. Wanichin comes to the rescue and helps her out... however, the pipe is broken and therefore, dysfunctional. Eimi thus goes to Wanichin's room to take a shower. When she comes out, she realized that Wanichin has left for his part-time job: server at a night club. It starts to rain outside so Eimi decides to bring to Wanichin an umbrella, just in case. Once she arrives, she becomes friend with the club master and singer... Then, Wanichin and Eimi leave for home since there's a typhoon and thus, there won't be anyone coming. As he leaves, Wanichin gets a good-bye kiss on the cheek from the singer. They arrive at the dormitory and discover that Eimi is locked out, so she sleeps with Wanichin (as in the same room, not as in together ). They talked a bit about Wanichin's family... Eimi realizes that Wanichin has no home to return to as his grandfather is dead and his relation with his parents are not good and so, she decides to go home and see her own family. Wanichin brings her to the train station where she bumps head with him as a good-bye kiss (really clueless our heroine!)... Wanichin is surprised at first and then, shows her a real good-bye kiss.

I 've read the author 2 other works (Kiss and 23:00) and therefore, once I realized Beauty is the Beast was from her, I download it right away! The art is quite nice and clean cut, very similar to her previous work; however different than most artwork you see from other shoujo mangas.... (you can see some samples below) Therefore, some might be annoyed by the really pointy nose... but I really think it's nice artwork and quite easy on the eye. As for the characters, I like them all i have to say. Eimi is different than most heroine... she's quite clueless and that's her charm :) Wanichin is our typical dark character and I can't wait to read more of his story!So far, I really like story and think it's quite good so far. The story development is slow and quite frankly, the story is not very orignal, but what hooks me up to this story is the feeling i get once I finish reading a chapter... very calm and very peaceful :)
