This is a rant; society is really ticking me off right now. It has made it nearly impossible for us to save money. Society (namely, stuff vendors) is structured in such a way that it's no longer possible to choose a cheaper option

I totally hear you on this. The phone company is just eating our money too. One thing a friend of mine is doing: prepaid cell phone. He hasn't had it long, so I'm waiting to see how it pans out, but we may switch to that.
Yeah... something like Virgin Mobile might work for you. Pay-as-you-go is expensive if you use it too much, but you might be in the target range.
Anyhow, I save on shipping by getting things in person, by taking the bus, but that takes a lot of time. If you have a Ritz Camera (or something similar) in the area, you can order stuff online (lab prints, not inkjet), and pick them up in person. And there's a much shorter turn-around. On the other hand, expensive shipping on books may still be less expensive if you're doing used-and-new on Amazon.
As for rent (per Mme. spikepage), I live in Los Angeles.
