Netiquette

So my current college course is about how to communicate online. This week's topic is netiquette such as smileys, emoticons, and abbreviations. I was appalled by what they were teaching, and wrote a discussion post to say as much, as professionally as possible. We'll see what they think ( Read more... )

ON a slightly related note, I have a friend who says at his college there were students who actually felt compelled to put actual "LOL"s in their term papers.

As for netiquette, I'd just wish people had a clearer understanding of when one can use the chatspeak, when one must use more proper diction, and when one should type as though one is typing a proper paper. LOLing in a formal email to a boss/manufacturer/techsupport etc. does not cut it. As for chatspeak, all I ask is that people use actual words ..not just nonsense babytalk or esoteric abbreviations. Things like "sozzy" and "can-haz" makes me want to put somebody in a chokehold.

I have had IM conversations very much like this with your husband. One (my favorite) was based on vocabulary from Jabberwocky. That was fun.
