Is spanking and violence related?

It is a well documented fact that children from abusive homes are more socially maladjusted that their peers. The question is whether or not spanking can or should be viewed as abuse, and if it can, should school officials be held accountable for spanking students at school? Did your parents remove you because of a school official hitting you? I am curious because I feel that spanking often causes lowered self-esteem, etc. I am also curious as to how many children either are taken out of school, or in later years end up as drop-outs. I cannot find any research on the subject; however, statistics show that areas that have or encourage such "punishments" also have higher drop-out rates. Whether or not that is a direct correlation, I don't know.
