Why I'll Never Become a Sucessful Writer

Dec 25, 2006 22:51

Merry Christmas everyone! It's been a fantastic week for me, and I'm psyched that I actually have some time to update tonight. My family just finished eating dinner, and now my mother is making drinks and I'm on my second cocktail now, so I'll be sloppy drunk in no time. I'm starting to feel a little giggly now, so I apologize in advance for ( Read more... )

Haha, thanks! It's Bridget on the day I took her senior portrait in like, 2003, I think. We took a few funny shots, and that was one of them.

Heh, thanks. I guess I'm just a little discouraged, but I'll get over it. I just don't get people sometimes.

It was nice seeing you at Shaw's the other day-- I love talking to you :)

Happy New Year!

Well, a little comment about that terrible critique. That girl seems to have some chip on her shooulder for unknown reasons, and I wouldn't pay attention to what she wrote. It was out of line to judge you personally through your writing. A lot of grad students think that they're light years better than any undergraduate, just because they're on the grad level. I've read your writing for years via live journal and even your entries here are well structured, very put together and extremely detailed. Your stories are incredible because you put so much more work into them than this silly journal. Out of everyone I know, you're the best writer, by far.

Please don't let that critique get you down. I know it's hard to focus on the good ones, but since there are so many good critiques, I hope you can.

Oh ya, and Merry Christmas :-)

You're right about the grad students-- they really do think they're smarter and all-around better than us undergrads. But their writing! God, the majority of it is pretty terrible in my opinion. I try not to let their comments drag me down, but it's frustrating when it's about something so personal.

Thank you for the vote of confidence. Coming from you, it means a lot. I'm lucky to have a group of talented writers as readers of this journal to encourage me, and I'm so grateful that you're one of them. Thank you.

Despite everything, I'll keep writing. It makes me happy, and I don't think I could ever give it up.

I hope you had a wonderful Christmas, Amanda! Happy new year!

You've got amazing skills as a writer and I think you could very well succeed at it. Even if you have problems with fiction now I am sure you can work past those... you probably just need more practice with it. You have a definite talent for drawing the reader into a story and if you could do that as well with fiction as you do with real life you could not help but be successful.

Thank you... I hope I'll be okay. The idea of fiction writing is still a little daunting, but I'm sure with some hard work I'll produce something truly great. I'm crossing my fingers, anyway. :)

Happy New Year, Bob! Send my love to Robin and the kitties!

Tara you are an amazing writer I wouldn't take what that stupid grad student said as anything....it sounds simply like someone was incredibly jealous. Don't let yourself get all down on your writing just because one person decided to try way too hard to be negative (trust me i've a had a grad student in one of my classes who sounds just like this girl and I'm pretty sure she barely passed the class. I have a feeling that some grad students especially ones taking writing classes just try way too hard to be critical!)

hope you had a great christmas and enjoy the rest of your break :)

Thanks, Caitlin. You're absolutely right. I just don't get the grad students, and I don't understand why some of them are so vicious. Just because they suck big time doesn't mean they have to drag other people down with them. Whatever.

I hope your Christmas was lovely (good job with your final grades, by the way!) and I hope your new year is wonderful!
