I have an 80GB Classic (one of the new versions), and I had a 4GB Mini before that. I've loved both, and never had any major troubles.
If you're looking to save money, go for the Shuffle. I think there's a 2GB model now as well. But if you're considering the Nano, just look at the price... for $70 extra you're getting ten times the storage space with the Classic. Maybe you won't use it all, but you probably will be surprised at how quickly it fills up. You can make playlists so it won't be shuffling through everything, if that bothers you. And at the end of the day, the Classic is much better value.
I wouldn't really recommend the Touch because of the price. If you want the extra features that the Touch has, wait for the iPhone and get even more features.
Depends what you want it for. The new Shuffles are designed for working out - not just the size/weight/clip, but the lack of a screen is an advantage there. Lets you focus on your workout, not your playlist. The Shuffle is more of a "second MP3 player", no good for listening to podcasts or different playlists. I use the MP3 player in my phone for those instead.

It occasionally freezes, but you just need to know how to hard-reboot it.
Saying that, I've had it like 2 years.
2gb doesn't sound like that much, but I'm the kind of person who will listen to music compulsivly.
