Chapter 1: The Road Goes Round Chapter 2: Things Collide
Murray, August 2008
“Where’s David?” says the man who seems pretty anxious. He looks tough and steady. The lines that compose his face show that he is demanding; he wants everything under his control and people better do as he tells. He and his wife have been walking around the house with full anticipation since 7 in the morning, while their 5 children are still sleeping peacefully in their rooms.
“Probably he’s still sleeping,” answers his wife coyly. Her attention is on the tea and toasts she’s making.
“Well, why do I feel like we’re the only curious souls about his college acceptance?” her husband complains.
“Jeff, I think that’s the letter!” his wife half-squeaks when she hears the sound of papers and postal box outside her house. As if it were a race, she runs to the front door and hurriedly reaches the postal box. She takes a neatly enveloped letter inside the house.
They immediately and carefully open that envelop, and suddenly they shout in glee, “He’s in! Our David is in!”
“Let’s just wake him up right now, Lupe!” Jeff exclaims impatiently.
“I don’t think so, Jeff. Let him sleep as long as he wants. See, he has done a lot. Let him rest,” Lupe says as she lets herself smile widely, “He has made you, us, proud, anyway.”
David knows what’s happening. He has been awake for a while before the letter came in, but he just decided to curl up still on his bed. Now he hugs his knees tight to his chest. He looks up to nowhere, feels weighed and spaced out. He is questioning himself: Is it wrong that I’m not feeling the same joy? Is he satisfied with his good work at making anyone else happy? And is he feeling down enough at his betrayal to himself?
In front of a stack of empty papers, the questions are still there, hanging on his ceiling low.

The Archuleta household is loud as always. David just stands there in front of the open door of his room, listens, watches, and seizes the moment like this.
It's a dissappointment that he would have to leave again.
New York City, August 2008
For David Cook, the little summer rain outside and the air-conditioned room he’s in, along with the fact the he will have his fine afternoon for himself are perfect. He decides to take a real good and long nap to complete the perfection of this fine afternoon. He’s drifting asleep peacefully, happily.
Unfortunately, his roommate is Andy Skib.
The door clicks open and soon, the peaceful state of David Cook is broken.
“Cook! Get your ass up now!” Andy shouts at sleeping body of Cook.
The body doesn’t move a flinch. Cook just mumbles in response. Andy knows he needs to do something more serious.
He goes to the bathroom and opens the tap and puts just enough water in a glass. He brings the glass of water with him to the bedside and splash Cook’s face with the water.
Cook gasps and his eyes shockingly open wide, “Fuck fuck fuck!” He gathers his flying spirit from somewhere in the dreamland as he sits there trying to dry his face using his undershirt. When he’s finally awake enough, he finds Andy standing there with one eyebrow cocked up, waiting expectantly.
“Andy Skib! You motherfucker! Man, since we’re gonna be roommates for another years, I am now telling you that there is no way, no fucking way, for you to be allowed to disturb my naps! And with the little rain outside? Damn, this was a sacred moment!”
Ignoring Cook’s ramble about his naps, Andy says, “Get your lazy ass up, now. We’re going to the airport to take Allison’s cousin.”
“Whoa, wait. That is Allison’s cousin. And you are Allison’s boyfriend. I don’t see how I get involved!”
Andy shrugged, "See, my car here has been a little difficult to control these days so I can totally use some-"
"Oh no. You want me to maybe give quite a push when your car here won't work for you?!"
"Damn straight!"
"What's in it for me?" Cook looks as if he's actually considering something.
"Dinner for 2 nights on me." Andy sighs, gives up.
“Three.”
Silence.
"Fine!"
Grinning, Cook reaches his leather jacket, puts it on, wears his shoes, and heads towards the door.
"Wait, wait, wait! Are you gonna go out there, just...just like that?!" Andy stands here open-mouthed and stares in horror.
Cook takes a look in the mirror. White undershirt, worn-out jeans, too formal shoes, leather jacket, stubble, messy hair in the way of just-got-out-of-bed-from-long-hibernating kind of messy hair. "Perfect." He mumbles.
"What did you say?" Andy asked, still standing there and stunned.
"Nah, let's go. I'm just dressing as my role. A car pusher."
---
Allison's outside. She laughs for a good 3 minutes just looking at Cook and his godly appearance.
---
The airport is not that busy, actually. But still, it's hard to find someone when you don't know his face. Or you actually do, but you kind of forget because you last saw him when you were in elementary school. And that's what happens to Allison here.
"Right. So tell me why don't you bring something like paper with his name on it?" Cook asks.
"I made it! But I just forgot to bring it." Allison says. Andy just simply looks at her in disbelief. "Alright, Dave, you go that way and start looking for him. Call his name or something. Don't fucking come back before you get the guy, okay?"
"Hey you didn't pay me for this!" Cook protests.
"Just fucking look for him already! Or no dinner for three nights. Like that, huh?" Andy smirks.
"Fine. Al, what's his name?"
"David."
"What?"
"David's his name."
"Uh huh, that won't work. Full name."
"David Archuleta"
With that, Cook leaves and swims in the sea of little crowd and begins searching. "David Archuleta...David Archuleta," he repeats again and again.
Not far from there, a particular David Archuleta feels like there's someone calling his name. David moves closer to the sound source. He observes the man for a while. He's a mess. Yes, David thinks the man is a complete mess, but he's like...one in a million. His hair sticks out in every direction possible, he's got that stubble on his face, he's wearing...weird clothes, his eyes look intense from where David stands. Hesitatedly, David approaches the man, "Excuse me?"
Cook stops and stares. He looks at him from head to shoes and observes. This boy is only as tall as Cook's ear. He's probably 16 or so. Damn, he's too sweet for his own good. His smile is so bright it could lights up the whole airport. A confused expression strikes the boy's face, "Um..." Right. So that's when Cook is kicked back to reality. He plays the big scary guy and growl, "What?"
That kind of makes David jump a little bit. He holds back his giggles.
"Oh, um, no, I'm sorry. I thought you were someone else. I'm sorry! I'm just gonna....um, yeah, uh, later!" David starts to be really confused and really nervous. He ends up smiling so wide and turns around and practically runs away. But deep inside, he knows he will never forget that face.
Cook just gives the boy a small nod and walks to the information center to find the David Archuleta. He lets out his breath when he's sure the boy has got lost again in the crowd. Honestly, he doesn't mind at all being the wrong person. The boy is the most perfect and beautiful human being Cook has ever seen in his life.
