Shoulderboards

Apr 09, 2011 21:37

I recently bought a black, leather jacket (or rather my godparents bought it for me as a birthday/graduation present). Curiously, it has shoulder straps for epaulettes, but none come with the jacket. I want to order some reproduction SS or Heer epaulettes to go on the shoulder straps. The buttons on the jacket are silver, so I'll probably go ( Read more... )

I believe the following links would be good starting points, since they include links to a number of different sites:

At The Front is the best way to go.
www.atthefront.com

The above mentioned sources have all their stuff made in China or Pakistan, and the accuracy/quality is crap.

LOL says who?
They buy most of their stuff from a wholesale company in China called Ant-Z militaria. Their camo is also produced in China by another company called "Andy Military" which is run by a Brit named barry. Do I need to point out their feldgrau jackets are cut like modern BDUs or that whoever made their erbenmuster pattern camo has never even bothered to look at a war era picture let alone hold an original? Or the post-war pebbled buttons on everything they produce?

Unless there is some secret part of the web page where they hide all of the "good stuff" show me ONE thing on their page that is done on original mills/patterns and I'll tell you why whoever said so is full of crap.

If you must buy this garbage, get it from here, same wholsale source and 30% less-

I find that unconvincing. Especially as rule 86a might cause a problem. (On a side note: If the website says that, isn't that fraud on their part, advertising something which is false to elicit money from people?)

Do you want Political SS or Waffen SS? 60% of the stuff out there is garbage 80% of the stuff is made in China or Pakistan, most of the vendors hawk worthless shit, and rave about how "original" it is. Since Lost Battalions closed, http://www.gd43.com/ is about the only stuff made from original patterns. Cyrus Lee has AWESOME stuff, but he is semi-retired, and has low inventory- http://www.soldat.com/. He is the only place to get original hats from a veteran maker FWIW.

At the front is GREAT for Waffen SS, but doesn't have political SS. Rick at hessen antique gets his stuff from the same chinaman as historybunker and militariacollection (ant-Z) but he will actually send it to you in decent time and not gouge you on the price like those others. He is out of stock on his political SS stuff, but he is a straight shooter and ships FAST.

Lost Battalions is closed? Shame, I'd read a lot of recommendations for their work. Cyrus Lee does have some incredible Grossdeutschland boards so I'll probably drop him an email about getting pips for them.

At the Front looks good too. I'm looking for Waffen-SS so I won't have a problem with their lack of political insignia. On the other hand, I hear varying reports of their quality.

Ed got cancer and had to close LB due to health problems he actually bought original looms, cutting machines and sewing machines to produce things from original patterns. He also had a HUGE collection of originals to compare against. There is a new lady calling herself "on the march" which is the only other producer from original patterns in the world. She is in the eastern US, and will evidently be manufacturing a "Deluxe Line" for At the Front soon.

If you just want shoulder boards, call Cyrus Lee, his insignia is still some of the best.

I'm confused with the comment about silver boards
So am I, now I've been staring at pictures for a week or so! Hmmm...having seen silver bullion on SS boards and gold bullion on Heer boards, I think I assumed the difference occurred across all officer ranks. It turns out that the Heer boards that had stuck in my head were GFM boards, therefore not at all usual!

I take it you want pre-war SS
It looks much easier to find the wartime version. (Prewar is this design, white cord on black wool, no Waffenfarbe, right?)

Wartime waffen ss and heer are very similar, generally the same waffenfarbe
As I've found out, to my chagrin! :D I'm keeping my eyes peeled for accurate dealers (according to other, more knowledgeable collectors): Janke and Richard Underwood are the most highly-recommended names so far. Do you know anything about either of them?
