Dead Like Me
Anyone knows this fantasy/comedy TV show?
It's about an 18 year old girl (Georgina, called George) who dropped out High School shortly before the exams and starts a boring office job. She generally hates life and is brooding about it. When during her office break, she randomly gets killed by a toilet seat of the Russian space lab Mir which comes tumbling down from space onto earth, hitting her and exploding.
But she isn't dead really - from now on she is a soul collector, helping people on the very minute of their death to get safely to the other side.
It turns out that death, heaven, the way to it and generally all soul collectors are organized very beaurocratically. She's part of a group of collectors who are a special unit and are in charge of murders, suicides and accidents - the violent reasons to die. As in other units who have to deal with death of illness and natural causes, for instance.
All of them have to touch people shortly before their death, thus collecting and helping the soul to enter the afterlife. The soul collectors get little yellow post-it papers in the morning during breakfast, stating the name of the victim and time and place of the killing/death, so they can be on the place of death to help the souls make the transition.
Anyway, I think this show is hilarious - mainly because George is narrating the story from Off, and she's very ironic and sarcastic - just like she was when she was alive. She has to deal with her new job and the state of being 'undead' which she comments really funny.
The reasons of death are hilarious as well. Like this woman who gets crushed by a piano which fell down from a crane which was supposed to be moving that piano from the street through an open window of a new apartment ... whatever, this just meets my wicked type of humor perfectly.
Anyway, foreign series and movies on German TV means dubbing - but in this case the dubbing was really great. The narrator, George, has exactly the ironic and sometimes sarcastic tone that I think is so appropriate for the story.
So I thought the original must be even better and got myself a copy of the series in the original English version ;-)
No, the original is NOT as good as the German translation. It so lacks the ironic under tone that I like most with this show. The stories are still hilarious, but somehow part of the spirit is gone :-(
This is the first time I ever saw an English speaking series or movie where the German dubbing is lightyears better then the original. Go figure.
But still, I'll treasure the DVDs.
