I know you're really just hurt and afraid

"Lils!"

Lily was swept from her reverie into the present. She sighed; things had changed so much from that first day on the train. She turned to see Remus Lupin running to catch up to her.

"What Lupin?" her voice betrayed her weariness. She'd been up all the night before patrolling the corridors. There had been a rise in pranks and Argus Filch, the new caretaker, had demanded that patrols be much more frequent.

"You okay?"

Lily looked at Remus, and shook her head.

"Just tired."

"Well, if you're not in the mood for James asking you out again... I suggest you take a different route."

Lily groaned, and stopped in her tracks.

"What's planned this time?"

"Ballons that he's planning to turn into roses," Remus rolled his eyes. Ever since their fifth year the previous year, the black-haired boy had been trying to win the affections of the fiesty red-head. His gestures had been growing more grandiose... But he kept being set back by the fact that he just couldn't help himself from torturing people for fun.

"Well, it's just easier to turn him down again..." She sighed, then looked at the only one of the Marauders she could stand, "Thanks Rem."

She steeled herself for the inevitable, and turned down the next corridor. There, as Remus said, were about a hundred balloons, but there was no James Potter in sight.

"Maybe he went somewhere else?" She murmured softly.

No such luck. The balloons suddenly were transfigured, and all the other girls in the hall oohed and ahhed, trying to grab some of the falling roses. The roses were not going to be deterred, however, and they formed a bouquet, presenting themselves to Lily. There was a card as well.

Sighing, she opened it, and read the note.

Took me two weeks to perfect this. Go to Hogsmeade with me? - James

Before she could think of how to respond, shrieks of laughter were heard another corridor over. Lily sprinted into the next hall just in time to see Severus Snape ducking as Sirius Black shot jinxes casually at him.

"Sirius Black!" Lily's voice was quiet, but everyone in the hall had heard the menace in it.

"What, pray tell, is going on?"

"Well, Snivellus here," Sirius said lazily, sending another hex at Snape who was glaring with intense hatred at him, barely managing to dodge, "was going to ruin the surprise Prongs left you. Speaking of, did you like it?"

"It was grandiose, and extravagant and outright foolishness," she snapped peevishly, "Now give Severus back his wand, you giant prat, or I shall call in a Professor to deal with you. You know magic is not allowed in the corridors. I am considering reporting James already for that ostentatious display."

Sirius winked at her, and tossed the black-haired boy with the hook nose back his wand. Then, smirking, he sauntered off down the hall, with Peter Pettigrew hurrying to catch up.

Looking at Severus, she shook her head, and walked on to Potions class, where Slughorn was waiting for his favourite pupils, Snape trailing sullenly behind her.

They took their seats, next to each other, as they'd sat for the past six years. Slughorn beamed, and started the lesson.

Only half paying attention, Lily scrawled Severus a note.

Sev, what were you doing?

Trying to keep Potter from harassing you, Lils.

Thanks, but I can handle myself.

I know, but I didn't think you'd always want to...

That's sweet. I do appreciate it.

So I talked more to Malfoy today.

That's good, it's about time you started making friends with people in your house... There's no reason that you shouldn't be the most popular in Slytherin, given how smart you are!

He thinks I shouldn't hang out with you so much

Why? If it's because Potter picks on you because of me, I'll just hex Potter.

I wish it were that simple...

What is it then?

Their conversation stopped as Slughorn was now making rounds, sniffing and prodding at the potions... Giving pointers, and drawng attention to examples of both good and bad brews.

And throughout the rest of the day, Lily had the sinking feeling that something was shifting... And life was never going to be the same....
