It was breakfast, and the Great Hall was buzzing with the chatter of students, punctuated by snores, such as the ones coming from Peter Pettigrew, who'd been half-dragged by his friends to the table, only to promptly fall asleep.

"I think Peter has a girlfriend, guys."

Lily's head popped up slightly at Remus' words; she had heard someone enter the common room after James and Sirius had left, perhaps this would answer her unasked questions.

"Peter?" James hissed, looking shocked.

"WORMTAIL?" Sirius searched his friend's eyes, looking for a hint of mirth, but Remus was serious.

"He came in after you two did. And he's been a bit... Evasive, lately, haven't you noticed?"

The other boys nodded and looked at their sleeping friend, unsure of whether to harass him or not.

"Let's let it be, we have Double Potions with Snivellus and the Slytherins right now," James once again was the deciding factor, and he stood, ready to lead his cronies to Potions.

Sirius swatted Pettigrew upside the head, causing the mousy boy to jump with alarm, and grab his bag instinctively.

"Potions, mate."

The four boys headed down to the dungeons, and left a very confused Lily in their wake, trying to sort out all the information she'd been given.

"What do I know?" She thought to herself as she too wandered down to the dungeons. "I know that last night Sirius snuck out to follow his brother, who apparently went to meet with a bunch of people who didn't want themselves recognized. Severus was there with those people. Since the only people he hangs out with other than me are Lucius, Crabbe and Goyle, I think it's safe to assume that this was a gathering of Slytherins; also evidenced by the fact that Sirius' brother is in Slytherin. I know that Peter Pettigrew is hiding something from his friends, and I don't think it's a girl, despite what Potter and his 2 cronies may think... I wonder..."

Her trail of thought was cut off by the fact that she had entered the Potions classroom and found that Lucius Malfoy was occupying the chair that was next to Severus, which left her with nowhere to sit except...

No, it couldn't be. Her eyes flailed about helplessly for another option. But the fact remained that the only place for her to sit was next to Lucius Malfoy's betrothed... Narcissa Black.

Narcissa bared her teeth at Lily, who was unsure of whether to take that as a smile or a growl, but decided to assume it was a smile. Smiling tentatively at the beautiful blonde girl, she gently sat down next to the girl who had loathed her ever since the first day of the first year.

"Evans. How nice. I simply MUST remember to speak to Lucius about arranging the seating accordingly. I shall have to wash ever so fervently to get the smell of mudblood off of me."

Lily looked at the girl, and looked at the back of her best friend's head. There was no way he hadn't heard... Everyone had heard. But his silence hurt more than anything.

"Narcissa, you bleach-headed bimbo, stop talking about Lily. She has more class in her little finger than you have in your entire body. Just because you have to cover up your inbreeding with barrels of perfume, doesn't mean you should taunt other people."

A feeling of gratitude swelled in Lily's heart, despite knowing exactly who it was who was defending her. She looked at James with a level gaze, and then turned to face the front, as Professor Slughorn came in.

Luckily it was a class where they didn't have to speak to their partners, nor even work with them; all they had to do was test their potions on them.

It was a glamour potion, incredibly easy for the girls, who had been using them since second year. Yet it would come up on the NEWT, as it could be slightly modified to form a quite powerful change in appearance, often used by Aurors out in the field.

"I'll make my potion extra well for you Evans, maybe then you can get a boyfriend... Of course, I might not even be able to fix the stench of your dirty blood."

Lily's eyes narrowed as the blonde chuckled to herself. Then, smirking, she added crushed beetles and a bowtruckle root. Silently chuckling, she stirred, adding the counter-stir that she instinctively knew would make the potion just that much more effective.

She scooped some into a goblet, and she and Narcissa switched. When Slughorn stood next to them, she tossed back the potion Narcissa gave her. She felt it working immediately, and smiled.

"Full marks, Miss Black! You do Slytherin proud..."

The room collectively gasped as Slughorn turned to look at the once regal Princess of Slytherin.

"What?" She asked, glaring at everyone.

What, indeed. Instead of the luxurious, long blonde hair she'd been so proud of, Narcissa was sporting a muddy brown bob, and her eyes had turned brown as well. Her nose looked as though it had been hit with a bludger, and her teeth, once beautifully white and straight, were crooked and rather dirty.

"Oh dear," Lily feigned horror, "I must have added something wrong."

Handing her nemesis a mirror, Lily hid a smirk, as James burst out laughing. Sirius was in stitches, and Remus was howling. Narcissa screeched in outrage, and lunged for Lily.

"Miss Black, Miss Evans, please! Everyone else is dismissed, the two of you will remain."

He made Lily prepare an antidote, and told Narcissa it would be brought to her at Lunch. The once-beautiful girl swept put of the classroom, attempting to salvage some of her dignity.

"Miss Evans," he sighed, "you and Mr Snape are my two best students, and while I could see him doing such a thing..."

"She called me mudblood, sir. I thought this would be a relatively harmless way to retaliate."

"Even to the point of getting a zero?"

Lily swallowed, hard, and then nodded.

"Yes sir."

"Well, you needn't worry this time. But don't let it happen again."

As Lily left the Potions classroom, she couldn't help but smile to hear her Professor muttering behind her.

"Bloody BRILLIANT. I must give Dumbledore a copy of this memory!"
