Were people always so self indulgent? I really do wonder. Looking back, not too far, to people such as the "lost generation" and the impressionist painters that palled around together you can definitely see a clear trend of sitting around being pretentious and drinking. maybe you can think of it as evolutionary.
people used to have to focus on themselves for survival.
and then technology disconnected people and made them lose a sense of community and people have thus become more self-reliant.
survival+disconnection+self-reliance=self-absorbtion

if you're fed up, try doing some volunteer work. maybe you'll meet some nonshitty people.
or maybe just use becky's means of dealing with the reality of human suck-go work with dogs.

you wonder if people only focus on themselves? you could look into how many people have blogs vs. how many of those people read other people's blogs. I think that the answer lies there. I used to have my links to things like my blog, myspace, livejournal and facebook under the heading "attention" if that helps your study. I had to delete it because I got sick of reading people self-promote themselves and try to outdo each other all the time. Status updates are a competition and if I didn't get responses I felt bad which I concluded was absolutely disgusting. In conclusion, I've made this comment post all about myself unintentionally, which I noticed when i skimmed for spelling errors, something that I felt would reflect poorly on me, but totally doesn't matter, which should also say something for your study.
