"They are treating me like a criminal when all I am is a working man," he said.
That entered a country illegally and lived here illegally, etc. etc. He may be a working man, but he's an illegal working man. Hopefully those pay stubs prompted an investigation.
Seriously, it's quite the sob story, but fact of the matter is just because there's a solid border between us and Mexico and not one of water doesn't mean he gets rights our fucking ancestors didn't get. Hell, if he actually learned English and became a legal immigrant he could've been making $30,000-$40,000 a year to send home! GASP AND SHOCK!
I do disagree with the government claiming the $59,000, but Jesus Christ, you're an illegal immigrant. Stop crying and face punishment for your crime (which, honestly, he's getting off light for).
While I agree that the story is sad, technically all that money is the proceeds of a crime and so I'm not entirely sure the government DOESN'T have the right to sieze it.
Ignorance of the law doesn't excuse American citizens - or those who are here legally - for breaking it. They should make him pay a fine, pay his back taxes (notice how quietly they slipped that in?) and then give him back what's left and let him take it home.
And he should take it and run. If you went to Guatemala to acquire drugs, thinking to earn a million dollars, but ended up being caught and sent to jail, only to eventually escape with your freedom and a fraction of whatever money you had expected - wouldn't you count yourself lucky?
If he'd been here legally....godemperorletoSeptember 29 2007, 05:13:14 UTC
...he'd have probably been able to keep the money, just so long as he paid a fine.
But, well, them's the breaks. I have no pity, especially when my ancestors came here, fought in this country's wars, and got called dagos and were refused jobs because they were "greaseball guineas". These people coming here illegally, working illegally, and sending our money back home illegally, is an insult to me and my entire family.
