Here's the story. Woman brain damaged after accident. Is awarded $470K from the company who owns the truck that hit her. Wal-Mart sued her for it because they covered her medical expenses... and they won.

More like another reason to hate this country's so-called Justice system.

I don't think this sort of thing is limited to Wal-mart. I doubt that there's a Fortune 500 company that wouldn't do this sort of thing.

Employer provided health insurance is a scam.

Sharon Weber, a spokeswoman for Wal-Mart, declined to discuss the details of the Shanks' case, but she said the company was obliged to act in the interest of the health benefits of its employees as a whole. "While the case involves a tragic situation, our responsibility is to follow the provisions of the (company health) plan which governs the health benefits of our associates," she said.

Sharon Weber has no soul. Nor do any other mouthpieces for corporate health insurance.

"Employers are trying to make sure these plans run as efficiently as possible," says Jay Kirschbaum, a senior vice president at global insurance broker Willis Group Holdings. I agree. Wal-Mart, while plenty evil, isn't any worse than a lot of other companies out there. Corporations exist to maximize profits. It's what they do, it's all they do. The problem is Americans who don't hold them accountable.

Regardless, the companies are grabbing the cash because their own profits are diminishing as they need to provide more and more payouts for things. The baby-boomers are all retiring and sucking up Social Security and pensions, and they don't give a shit that we'll never see a penny of it--they never did, nevermind their socialist save-the-world-for-our-children bitching and moaning in the '60s.

Regardless, the companies are grabbing the cash because they can. With impunity.

True.

I'm not trying to justify what they are doing.

Nevertheless, if you don't like what Wal-Mart [sic: or any other company] does, don't shop there.
