Last night, I got back on the wagon with Final Fantasy XIII again. I hadn't played in almost 3 weeks mostly because I've been distracted by Warioware D.I.Y., which is a whole lot of fun, by the way. If you're like me and have always wanted to try designing games, this is your chance. Although the interface is limited to touchscreen tap gameplay ( Read more... )

I too fell off the FFXIII bandwagon. I'm really early on. It's funny....today's Penny Arcade is pretty on point. I'm not even through the tutorial yet. It's just so freaking hard with my spare time to say, "you know what I want to do? Play video games. How bout FFXIII? naaah....I wanna play something fun." I don't care for the battle system much. Maybe I'll get used to it, but it seems to go to fast to monitor all/most of the critical stuff you're supposed to. maybe I'm slipping in my old age...but I've been playing FF since 1988, goddammit. I never came close to not being able to follow the action. Either things are going to get better or I am going to have characters drop like flies. I'm not really too into the story.

That's a shame you didn't get through XII. I liked that one a lot. Not in the conversation of "greatest FF evar," but a huuuuuuuuge improvement over X. What did you find wrong with it?

I didn't really dislike FFXII; I was having fun with it until I got stuck. I got to a stage where there's mist everywhere, and you can't really tell where you're going. On top of that you have to step on these different platforms in the correct order or you can't move on. I got really frustrated with that puzzle and gave up. Also, I felt like there weren't going to be any major plot twists in the storyline. It seemed very predictable to me. Of course, I don't know how far I was in the game.

I'm surprised at how many people didn't like FFX. That one is probably my favorite of the 3D FF games. I liked the "sweet sorrow" overtones of the game world and characters. In FFX, I actually finished the monster arena and beat Nemesis. I can't say that about most jRPGs. I loved the battle system because it allowed me to sit back and think about my next move for a few moments. Being able to see 10-20 turns in the future made for great strategic gameplay.

FFX-2 I don't consider to be part of the series.

FFX was monstrously linear, and although I liked the leveling up system, I think I filled up the whole freaking thing 40% through. It was just SOOOOO linear it hurt.

I had no idea where I was in FFXII the whole game. I was stunned at the end of the game when I was at the end of the game. It just felt as if I was only 3/4 done.

FFX-2 never happened. It's the only FF game I started and didn't finish. Though FFXIII may join that club. I hope not though. I mean to muddle through no matter what.

Random: FFX I hated the story and characters, though I wonder if handed off to a different writer it could have been excellent. The combat system is really what kept me playing that game, though when I think back, the dungeons were satanic. Wild Arms 3 spoiled me in my expectations of what a JRPG dungeon should be ( ... )

FFXIIIs linear-ness starts to drop away in Chapter 10 (and then there's the whole post-game quests/missions too). I'm on the verge of breaking into the open world experience that I've come to love in Final Fantasy games and will probably start pushing my way through Ch. 10 later tonight. I had, what I hope to be, my final tutorial message last night. 27 hours into the game...

Oh, and btw, you still have a $5 deposit for Demon Soul's at my store. Saw it when I was killing time going through our reservation lists the other day. Thought you might want to know :) If you want, I can flip it to a different game if there's something coming out that you want, or just stop in sometime and get your monies back.

Ah Demons Soul.. I'm really glad I forgot. From what I've read about the difficulty of that game, it would have really brought out my inner 5-year-old. My dual shock 3 would probably be impaled in my TV screen by now.

Anyway, would you mind putting it towards SSFIV for 360? Also, would you be able to set aside one of the special SF gamepads when they come in?

Aye. I should be able to do that. Poke me on here or facebook this weekend just as a reminder.

Did you ever get around to reading Actionbutton.net's epic-length review that just demolishes FF13 from a gameplay perspective?

As for storyline, I'm sorry, but the FF series now suffers from the whole "angsty teens save the world" trope that seems to infect all of anime and Japanese video games these days. My credulity has been stretched one too many times.

I read the whole thing and considered not buying it for quite a while, but in the end, I succumbed. What can I tell ya?
