so today I went to class. This class amounted to us watching this movie called the vienna tribunal. or something like that. it is about this UN conference that happened in vienna in 93 where they passed this stuff that officially made womens rights human rights. so part of this process was a wide array of womens organizations from different ( Read more... )

I agree completely with what you said regarding the tribunals and exceptionalizing violence. However, there is something to be said for acknowledging the violence that occurred. No there is nothing really happening that will affect the systemic but on some level the women are having their experiences acknowledged as valid which is something that has never happened before. Sure, it doesn't happen in everyday life (when was the last time we had a tribunal for the 1 out of every 3 women in Canada that are sexually assaulted...oh yeah, never) but it is a start. And laws are only words but so are theories. It is easy to theorize when the theories don't cross our bodies or our lives. Maybe that is what the prof was trying to get across by showing the videotapes.
I don't know the answer to these questions. All i know is that walnuts are really gross and that is why they are optional ingredients in recipes. I already have a hard enough time with academia, if it was stuffed with walnuts the very smell of it would make me want to hurl.
