I just had a conversation with someone I work with wherein I said I thought that Critical Thinking and Formal Logic (recognizing circular logic, straw man fallacy, ect) should be required as part of the mandatory public school curriculum so that citizens in this country will know how to think and how to recognize a line of BS when someone tries to ( Read more... )

So, basically he read 1984 and thought it was a how-to manual?

That's what it seems like sometimes. He believes in a sort of socioeconomic Darwinism. The rich rule because they have proven worthy by getting to the top or staying there. The poor are poor because they deserve to be because of a lack of drive, will power, ambition and intelligence. As such the poor have proven they are unworthy to lead and must be led by those who have through acquisition of wealth and power proven their worth to rule. He thinks thinks everyone deserves the level of education they can afford. Survival of the fittest (richest).

Fortunately he's not someone I work with directly on a regular basis, just someone who crosses my path in the course of our jobs from time to time. I don't think I could handle working with him directly. I think that would end in me looking for a way to get rid of a body.
