“You pushed and pushed and pushed Jethro and then as soon as it actually became a possibility you backed away. The choice had been made. Mother was moved out. I didn’t want to be alone.”
Jethro moved to touch Ducky on the arm, but he moved out of reach.
“You were the one who suggested I put Mother in the home.” Despite keeping his voice low for the sake of the third person in the room, Ducky spoke angrily. The hurt was evident in his words.
“Thought she was wearing you out. I didn’t want you aging before your time.”
“Well I did age, Jethro, the day she left. Up to then I couldn’t, she relied on me, I had to be the son, carer, the capable one. Now I’m the old - don’t interrupt - I’m the old one, I need someone who...” Ducky paused reluctantly in his increasingly vehement flow.
“Who will look after you.” Jethro conceded quietly.
Ducky looked at the floor. Finally he looked back up and spoke firmly. “Yes.”
“She called you ‘Donny’, Duck - and you let her.”
“I ‘let’ you shorten an already less than flattering nickname.”
“What? Your Mom moves out and the next person to walk in gets to call you what they like? Or did you object to diminutives just for her sake? Were you that much of a Mommy’s boy?”
“That is not fair, Jethro.”
“Or is it just a personal complex?” Jethro spat. Ducky opened his mouth in shock. Jethro calmed himself fractionally, until he glanced back at Jordan, still busying herself on the other side of the room. He began to turn away.
“Whadda you want, Duck, a mate or a matron.”
“You bastard.”
Jethro swung back. He didn’t care that Jordan’s attention had clearly been caught now. Ducky cut him off before he even started.
“It’s too late Jethro. I’m with Jordan now.”
Jethro glanced from his friend to the other doctor now hovering hesitantly at a distance.
“And you’re never gonna leave her, are you?”
“At my age? What do you think?” A look of uncertainty suddenly crossed Ducky’s features, despite his anger.
“Worried she’ll leave you though.”
“Stop it, Jethro.” Ducky bit back. “If you hadn’t led me on.”
“Duck.” Jethro sighed heavily. “I never meant...” He drew in breath, but he never got to finish. Jordan had clearly had enough of people upsetting Ducky for one day.
“I’ve finished the autopsy on Petty Officer Lim. There’s nothing here we can’t run through tomorrow, Doctor. Maybe you should take the rest of the day too.” Ducky tore his eyes from Jethro and turned to look at Jordan. He gave a brief nod and began to move away, lightly guided by her, without a backward glance.
