Hard at Work

Jethro and Daniel had been hard at work on the nursery for several days each trying to keep it a secret from Jen what they were doing. Now Daniel was curled up reading somewhere and Jen was hopefully resting so Jethro snuck back up to finish up a few little things. He looked around smiling to himself it was turning out just right so far.

It's been pretty easy to keep it a secret from her since she's hardly home anymore, but tonight, she hasn't been able to sit still for more than an hour or two. It's from all the sitting she did at work. Now she needs to move around, so she finds herself wandering. She figures she hasn't seen or heard from her spouse in a while, so she may as well go wandering in search of him. Coming up the stairs, she sees the light on in the nursery.

Jethro doesn't hear her as he's touching up the stain on the crib the radio playing softly across the room. It was coming together nicely and he was happy with everything.

He had left the door open, so when Jen reaches the room, she stops in the doorway. She covers her mouth with a hand as she leans against the door frame, completely stunned. There are no curtains and no rug, but the quilt draped over the rocking chair is the same one she was going to get. And the crib he started building for that room is here. She hadn't seen him bring it in. The room, so far, looks exactly the way they left the one in New York. She knows he's reproducing it here. Silent tears well up in her eyes.

It's almost like a sixth sense sometimes knowing when she's in a room with him and he turns. "Hey, I was going to surprise you." He smiled and made his way over to where she stood.
